Phil - Arnold's grandfather has been the proprietor of the Sunset Arms since he took over for his father. Phil cares a great deal about his grandson, and often gives him advice (though Phil's advice is not always helpful) or tells tall tales of his youth. A "wily old coot", he kept Arnold from being bored by telling the tale of the Haunted Train, taught Gerald to appreciate his family by renting him an apartment, and has otherwise helped Arnold and his friends out without their knowing it.

Gertie - "Pookie", as Arnold's grandfather affectionately calls her, is a real "free spirit" who often dresses up and acts as a cowgirl, jungle explorer, or karate master to suit her mood. She is a pretty good piano player, and often plays at holidays and other events, though she never plays the right songs. She and Phil shared a relationship similar to Helga and Arnold's as children, so it is likely that Gertie knows about Helga's secret.

Oskar - For most of the people in the Sunset Arms, Oskar Kokoshka is a "loser". He has trouble holding down a job, is dependent on his wife, Susie, for everything, and spends much of his time gambling. Phil particularly dislikes Oskar, seeing him as a lazy good-for-nothing who has trouble paying for anything. Though Oskar's attitude makes him hrd to deal with, he can be one of the funniest characters on the show.

Susie - Susie is Oskar's long-suffering wife; in addition to holding several jobs so she can pay for Oskar, she has to take care of him like a small child. Susie has threatened to leave because of Oskar's selfishness, but they always get back together.

Ernie - Ernie Potts is a short construction worker who lives at the Sunset Arms. He doesn't have any family to speak of, and considers Arnold as his "son". Ernie once fell in love with Lola, a plus-size fashion model, and had a Helga-like obsession with her.

Mr. Hyunh - A Vietnamese-American who immigrated during the Vietnam war, Mr. Hyunh (pronounced 'win') works at a nearby fast-food restaurant. On Christmas, he was reunited with his daughter Mai, thanks to Arnold and Helga. Mr. Hyunh posesses an unlikely talent as a country singer, but decided not to pursue a career so he could stay with the people he cared about.

Mr. Smith - Mr. Smith was the most mysterious resident of the boarding house; the only thing known about him is that he wears a bowler hat. He was never seen by the other boarders, and insisted on a great deal of privacy. He had his meals sent up to his room and got to have a private bathroom. Because he was the only boarder who could be relied on to pay his rent (and even paid extra), Arnold's grandpa did not mind. Mr. Smith eventually left the Sunset Arms.

Lana Vail - Lana Vail lived in the boarding house during the early seasons, but she eventually moved out.

Mr. Purdy - Little is known about Mr. Purdy, except that he has a chicken in his room.

Abner - Abner is Arnold's pet pig, and lives with Arnold in the Boarding House. Abner once ran away from home but eventually came back because he missed Arnold. - Scott

Phil's Father - He ran the Sunset Arm's back in the old days. - Scott
