Craig Bartlett
![]() |
The guy behind it all, Craig created Hey Arnold. In addition to creating the show and writing many of the episodes, he has also done several voices for the series, including the DJ Nocturnal/Nashville Ned (who is modeled after him). Craig has also had a large presence in the online Hey Arnold community, and keeps the 'boarders' at the Unofficial Message Board up to date by posting as Nocturnal Ned. |
Craig grew up in the Pacific Northwest, a location which later helped to inspire Arnold's city. While studying to be a painter, he became drawn to animation (forgive the pun) and decided to focus on that rather than painting. He first worked at Will Vinton Productions, a Portland-based claymation studio most famous for animating the California Rasins. Deciding that he would need to move to Los Angeles, Craig left the studio to direct claymation shorts for Pee Wee's Playhouse. In his spare time, he made the first cartoon featuring Arnold, albeit in claymation form. His next job in Los Angeles was for the new series Rugrats as, unusually enough, a story editor. Though he had never worked in that capacity before, he quickly learned the ropes, and his experiences on Rugrats would help him with his own series.
Craig was also creating more Arnold-related things; he made two more claymation shorts as well as several comics for Simpsons Illustrated magazine. In 1994, Craig pitched an Arnold pilot for Nickelodeon. In the pilot, he developed the characters of Arnold and his friends. It was at that time that Helga's unrequited love became a part of the show; Craig's wife, Lisa Groening (the sister of Simpsons creator Matt) first suggested the idea. During the series' long run, Arnold and the other characters have continued to develop.
